UN Chief Condemns Deadly Attacks in Congo
On the US social media platform X, Guterres emphasized that the UN remains "fully committed" through the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to assist Congolese authorities in safeguarding civilians, preventing violations of human rights, and fighting impunity.
In a statement relayed by his spokesperson, Guterres on Saturday extended his condolences to the families and communities impacted by the attacks, affirming that the UN stands in solidarity with them.
The assaults in Lubero, North Kivu, between Nov. 13-19 claimed the lives of at least 89 individuals, including no fewer than 20 women.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council on Saturday welcomed the endorsement of the Doha Framework for Peace between Congo’s government and the M23 rebel group, recognizing it as a significant measure toward de-escalation and tackling the underlying causes of conflict in eastern Congo.
Council members expressed gratitude to Qatar and the US for their mediation efforts and reiterated the "key role" of the African Union and Togo.
They encouraged the signatories to implement a "permanent, effective and verifiable ceasefire" and urged them to "work in good faith" to finalize outstanding protocols and technical arrangements.
